Whole milk versus skim
Research shows:
- While saturated fat from dairy does raise LDL, it is an increase in large, fluffy and benign LDL – not the small, dense and atherogenic LDL which can lead to the formation of a thick plaque that contains cholesterol and other lipids.
- There is no significant evidence associating dietary saturated fat with risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. (Patty W Siri-Tarino, Qi Sun, Frank B Hu, and Ronald M Krauss, 2009)
- There is research, in several populations, that shows that full-fat dairy consumption is associated with lower BMI and lower waist circumference.
- In December 2010, a report by Dr Dariush Mozaffarian suggests that a fatty acid found in whole dairy foods may lower Type 2 Diabetes risk. There has been a call for more research on this topic.
