Goats require a minimum of care, but that doesn't mean that they do not require any care. Goat owners and care takers will want to make sure their goats' are disbudded, tattooed as needed and hooves are trimmed.
Trimming Hooves
Goat hooves must be trimmed about once a month to avoid over-grown and malformed hooves. Pay special attention to:
- Pregnant females who may be more sedentary in that later months of pregnancy and n
- Older goats
- Goats living on soft footing
Disbudding
Much has been written and discussed about the advantages and disadvantages of horns. The bottom line is no matter what the argument for keeping a goat's horns, it is safer for the animal and those around it if the animal's horns are removed. disbudding is considered the best option. Tattooing
Tattoos are permanent identification numbers that can help your record keeping, hey can identify a goat long after you sell it, and in some cases have helped retried lost or stolen animals. If you raise registered animals you will have to tattoo them. Even if you goats aren't registered, tattooing is still a good idea.
